As a long-time Mac enthusiast, I might well have bought Madden NFL 2000 just to show my support for the first big-time sports game to come to the platform. Lucky for me that the game turned out to be so good. Having never played Madden before, and being relatively ignorant of the intricacies of football, I was pleasantly surprised by Madden's fast and fun gameplay. The playbook and game options are rather staggering, but the basics are not hard to grasp in a few sessions, and when I played my first 15-minute-quarter exhibition game, I got so wrapped up in the play-by-play and action that I was surprised that almost two and a half hours had gone by.
Now the caveats, which, though numerous, are not severe. While Madden runs acceptably on my stock G3/266 Mhz machine (with its underpowered graphics acceleration), the player graphics are pretty choppy up close, and one would really need either a newer machine or, say, a Voodoo 3 card to see this game at its best. Also, as of December, Madden for the Mac doesn't yet support PC-Mac network games or allow Mac users to find opponents via the MaddenNet Internet game-matching service (though a third-party game-matching service application is included, and a PC-Mac solution is supposed to be in the works). The manual is simultaneously overwhelming (in its extensive lists of commands and options) and underdetailed (no real walk-through is provided for the novice, and the manual's reference to game-based help menus is a weak cop-out--like the menus themselves). The manual also appears to have a number of typos (wrong page number cross-references, missing text), and the sometimes-there, sometimes-not keyboard conversions for gamepad buttons are frustrating. The game's deep nested set of menus is tricky to navigate and employs what to me are counterintuitive interface techniques (spacebar to select some options, for example). Finally, it did not go unnoticed by me that the Windows version is cheaper than the Mac version, at least on this Web site.
All this aside, Madden NFL 2000 is a great game, and a great and heartily welcomed addition to the Mac family. May it be the first of many Mac sports games.
